Last Day Of School - Happy Summer!

Happy June! Can it possibly be the end of the school year already??
It has been a wonderful year and I am sure the children are looking forward to their summer vacations.
I have some final bits of information to share with you:
- Tomorrow, Tuesday, is the last day of school. There will be an early dismissal for all children (1:00 PM, or 11:00 AM for the pre-school).
- Through the generosity of the National Honor Society at Fort Lee High School we have installed a “Free Library” in the front of the school. It looks like a bird house and has a picture of an eagle. Information is listed on our website, and the idea is to provide reading material for children of all ages. Please “leave a book” to “take a book” and share your favorite stories with our School 2 Community.
- Please be sure to have your children participate in the Summer Reading Program sponsored by the Fort Lee Public Library. Reading will open the doors of imagination to your children and will ensure they achieve more success in school and in life.
- Students’ report cards will be available on line tomorrow, Tuesday at 1:00 PM. Please be sure to log on to the Genesis portal for your child’s final report card.
- Letters will be mailed in late summer with your child’s assignment for the 2016-2017. Many changes take place over the summer months and to ensure proper placement, assignments will be made in August.
- All supplies lists will also be posted on our School 2 website. This will allow you plenty of time to prepare for September.
It has been a pleasure to work with you this year and to watch your children grow and succeed. I hope you and your families have a wonderful summer and can take advantage of the time and weather to have some true quality time together.

Today, our Grade 3 and Grade 4 students were unable to access the PARCC assessments due to issues with the Pearson Access Next (PAN) system. As a result, the testing window has been changed. PARCC testing for Grade 3 and 4 Math will be resumed, and continue through . As a result, Grade 5 and 6 PARCC testing dates will be adjusted and will begin on .
Peter Shulman, Deputy Commissioner of Education, has informed us that many schools throughout New Jersey are experiencing problems and that Pearson is working to address this issue. They intend to have the system in optimum state prior to testing beginningmorning.

As you know, the students of Fort Lee School District will be participating in the PARCC assessments during the months of April and May. Each grade level is scheduled for about 7 consecutive (school) days of testing. The 3rdand 4th grades will be testing Wednesday, April 13th to Thursday, April 22nd. The 5th and 6th grade students will be testing April 22nd to Monday, May 2nd.
The teachers and students at School 2 have been working diligently all year to gain knowledge of the common core standards in order to be ready. They have also been practicing their typing skills and sample PARCC questions in order to be properly prepared with the technology skills required.
In order to help your child be ready for the testing schedule please note the following suggestions/procedures:
- Please be sure your child has sufficient rest each night before the test. Children should have a t least 8 – 10 hours of sleep.
- Children should have some type of nourishment in the morning. Please do not “over feed” your child. He/she should have what is usually the practice for breakfast. We have children from many different cultures and “breakfast” can mean quite a range/amount of foods.
- It is imperative that children be present and ON TIME each day. If a child comes to school late, after testing has begun, he/she WILL NOT be permitted to take ANY PART of the test administered that day. The student will have to take the assessments on the make-up day. This is not ideal, as some children do not perform as well when not testing with their classmates in their usual environment.
- Backpacks and cell phones should remain at home during the stated grade level testing days. Any cell phones brought to school will be collected and kept in the office for the duration of the test.
- Part of the assessment may include a video. It is strongly recommended that students bring in their own headphones in order to feel more comfortable while listening. They should be sent in a zip-lock bag and will be kept in school for the duration of the test. If your child does not have headphones, they will be provided.
Please keep in mind that the most effective way you can help your children is to remain calm and reassure them that they will do well if they listen, follow directions, and stay focused.

Please read the important message below form the Fort Lee Police department.
The Borough of Fort Lee has contracted Reggio Construction to conduct sidewalk repair and roadwork on the entire length of John Street. Reggio Construction began the work on Thursday, March 24th. They will first start by replacing the sidewalks that need repair. Once completed with all the sidewalks, they will mill and pave the roadway. Reggio Construction are attempting to complete all this work by Friday, April 8th.
While completing this roadwork, Reggio Construction will make all efforts to keep John Street north bound open to traffic. However, there will be times were it will not be safe for motorists and the workers which will cause the Fort Lee Police Department to close the street for thru traffic. If you utilize John Street to get to School #2, please allow yourselves some extra time in the morning and afternoon.

Second grade students at School 2 turned back the clock and represented their favorite president of the United States. The students utilized computers and internet-based research skills to locate facts and write a biography of their assigned president. Students dressed up and presented their biographies to their parents and guardians on February 12th, 2016. Parents and guardians loved going back in time and meeting the presidents!
The fourth grade students completed a month long research project on a famous African American who made a lasting impact on society. They researched specific information in nonfiction text and wrote a research report detailing the person’s life, accomplishments, and impact the person had on society. They also completed a creative project showcasing the relevance of the individual and his or her accomplishments. Students presented their completed research report and projects at our parent showcase in February.
The students in Mrs. Marquart’s 5th and 6th grade class love learning about Science. This marking period, they are exploring weather and climate all around the world. Their first investigation included manipulating air using syringes. Students attached flexible tubes to the end of the syringes to demonstrate how air can still flow through small spaces. They then crimped the ends of the tubes to cut off the flow of air and also attached the syringes to each other to show how air takes up space. Each group wrote down their observations and shared them with the rest of the class. The students truly look forward to performing these experiments and investigations.
The fifth and sixth graders, along with their parents, came to Reading Under the Stars with Ms. DiBartolo and Mrs. Rice on the evening of February 25th in their PJ's. The families learned how to use sticky notes code their reading and write down their observations as well as questions. Starbucks (on Lemoine Ave in Fort Lee) donated delicious treats and hot cocoa for all of the guests to enjoy. The families had a fun and engaging evening, and also learned new strategies that they can use at home when their children are reading.

I received a B.A. in Communication Disorders from Penn State University and an M.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Montclair State University. I also hold my Certificate of Clinical Competence from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and certification in New Jersey as Speech-Language Specialist. I began my career as a Speech-Language Pathologist working at Saint Barnabas Outpatient Center in Livingston, New Jersey and providing New Jersey Early Intervention services. I have been working for the Fort Lee School District since 2006 and have worked with preschool through high school students during that time. At present, I work primarily with students with Autism throughout the district. Communication, both non-verbal and verbal, is vital for an individual to engage in successful social interactions and to participate in academic activities in the classroom. I strive to help each child learn components of grammar, vocabulary, articulation and pragmatics in order to improve communication skills. I believe in providing a challenging yet nurturing environment, as well as collaborating with colleagues and families to facilitate learning. Hello, my name is Margaret Sussi. I am a preschool special education teacher here at School # 2. I started teaching in 2009 and was the first preschool teacher in the district of Fort Lee. I have been in the district for seven years. For most of my students I am their first school experience. It can be a very scary and uncertain time for both child and parent. I know that it is my job to make sure that both of them feel comfortable and safe within the school environment. My teaching philosophy has always been keep an open communication between myself and my students’ parents, collaborate with my fellow teachers, create as many hands-on activities as I can, the messier the better, set high expectations that can be achieved through small and large group instruction, and create a structured environment where students feel safe and comfortable to work, play and gain the necessary foundational skills they will need for kindergarten.

During the month of October we celebrated our theme of Respect at School 2. We began the month with Respect Week. Students signed our School 2 Anti-bully Pledge, promising to be an UPSTANDER, not a bystander when it comes to bullying. We had a variety of fun, but educational activities throughout the week. For instance, we dressed alike for “Twin Day” to show we’re buddies, not bullies. We practiced being an Upstander and “being someone else’s hero”, by wearing our favorite superhero shirt, and we “took a walk in someone else’s shoes” by wearing two different shoes to school to learn about empathy. Many classes also participated in our “Decorating the Door” contest. This was an ongoing project throughout the month in which classes decorated their classroom doors with creative, anti-bullying messages and pictures, competing to win a 1st or 2nd place prize.
For Peace Week we all wore our favorite tie dyed shirts and peace accessories, and listened to a great band called “Squeaky Clean,” who taught us how to respect each other’s differences. What’s more, our Peer Mediators learned how to help their classmates resolve conflicts in a more peaceful manner.
During Red Ribbon Week, our SADD members decorated the school with posters containing anti-drug messages, students covered themselves in red clothing in honor of red ribbon week, and students and teachers eagerly participated in Crazy Hair Day, to show that “We’re crazy about being drug free”. In conjunction with all of these fun activities, we learned how to resolve conflicts with KELSO, and we read and discussed stories such as, “Just Kidding” by Trudy Ludwig, “The Juice Box Bully” by Bob Sornson and Maria Dismondy, and “Frenemy Jane, The Sometimes Friend” by Stephanie Sorkin.
Finally, we concluded our October celebration with our Character Awards Assembly, in which one student was selected from each class as being the most respectful student for the month of October.

Please join us to learn how to help your child at home with the reading process in Grades 3-6. [More Information].
Elizabeth Janson’s 3rd and 4th grade class at School 2 in Fort Lee, New Jersey spent time this November reading, writing and talking about Veteran’s Day. Students read nonfiction text to learn the history of Veteran’s Day. They read a Reader’s Theater script, taking turns reading various parts in a play about different ways to celebrate Veteran’s Day. Finally, students wrote a persuasive paragraph about why it is important to celebrate Veteran’s Day. This writing piece began with a position statement and included at least 4 supporting reasons to back up their position. Students then create a patriotic Agamograph (a kinetic piece of art named after the Israeli artist, Yaacov Agam) by coloring and carefully folding a picture that shows the American flag, when viewed from one angle, and saluting soldiers, when viewed from another angle. The students enjoyed (and practiced literacy skills for) this patriotic holiday.
In Music, they studied the works and lives of Franz Liszt, Frederic Chopin, Johannes Brahms, and Peter Tchaikovsky. While listening to examples of their music, the students came to appreciate the different styles that each composer brought to that era. In Social Studies, they learned how the Industrial Revolution provided a vehicle for the composers to make their orchestras fuller and richer. In Language Arts, they touched upon the works of Edgar Allan Poe and Charles Dickens, which helped them appreciate the social climate of the times. In their Visual Arts classes, they observed and studied works from the Era of Romanticism and Impressionism.
As a culmination of this project, the children played a game to review the broad scope of information that they had learned while studying for their final quiz.
Second graders at Fort Lee School #2 are studying communities in Social Studies. They took this opportunity to research the past and present of their own community Fort Lee. Did you know Fort Lee was the first town to film, even before Hollywood!
On September 17, 2015, the first grade classes from School No. 2 took a trip to the Fort Lee Public Library. Miss Ellen gave the students a tour of the library and they learned how to select books in the children’s section by author and genre. Miss Sarah read stories to the children and entertained them with George, her pig. The students also viewed Scholastic videos of some popular picture books in the library’s theater. All the first graders now have their very own library card. They look forward to returning to the Fort Lee Public Library to borrow books as they continue to develop their love of reading.
The month of November was when we celebrated Native American Heritage. Our fifth grade students learned about the history of the Trail of Tears in Social Studies. We discussed the hardship the natives faced along the way. As a part of the unit, they also studied and reflected as a group on the Trail of Tearspainting illustrated by Robert Lindneaux. They wrote a diary entry after reflecting on the illustration from the perspective of a Cherokee tribe member. Our students learned that the Cherokees were forced to leave their homeland to make a harsh journey to their final destination in Oklahoma. The students did a great job at composing a creative journal entry about their harsh journey.
On December 11th, 2015 the first grade classes of School No. 2 hosted the Future Teachers of America Club from Fort Lee High School. The “Future Teachers” shared stories and conducted winter-themed activities. The first grade students were engaged during the lessons which utilized the high school students’ Chromebooks. The older students circulated and assisted the first graders as they completed their projects. It was a memorable experience for the young students of School No. 2.
Students in Ms. Baiardi's class learned how to compose a letter. They practiced writing to authors of the books they read. They also write letters to their parents every letting them know what they learned in school. To further their skills and to make it more fun for them, they wrote a letter to their favorite Disney characters. They mailed them to Disney World in Florida. They just received their letters back! They are all very excited and loved sharing their letters with their classmates.
On Monday, December 14, the Bilingual and ESL students at Fort Lee School #2 had the opportunity to sample various breads and desserts from around the world at their “International Breads and Desserts Table”. This cultural activity began with Mrs. Han, Mrs. Sgro, and Mrs. Yada reading the short story “Tony’s Bread” by Tomie De Paola. Students listened to the folktale of how the Italian “panettone” came to be. After listening to the story, students decided which breads and desserts they wanted to taste. All the items were brought in by the students and represented their countries of origin. The School #2 ESL and Bilingual students learned about customs, holiday traditions, and food from around the world while interacting with their classmates. A yummy time was had by all!

Third Graders at Elementary School Number Two in Fort Lee Sponsor a Teddy Bear Raffle to Raise Money for the Saint Jude’s Children’s Fund
“There is no better gift than the gift of knowing that you helped someone else.” This is the message that the third grade teachers at Elementary School Number Two in Fort Lee tried to impress upon their students. In the month of December, the third graders at School Number Two sponsored a Build-a- Bear Raffle to raise money for Saint Jude’s Children’s Fund. This fundraiser was titled: Win a Bear and Show that You Care.
Teddy Bears are widely acknowledged as a symbol of comfort for children. In fact, in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting (Sandy Hook, Connecticut December 13th, 2012), people from all around the world sent teddy bears to the students of Sandy Hook Elementary. This inspired the third grade teachers of School Two to purchase four Build-a-Bears to use in their raffle. The students named the bears Charity, Generosity, Compassion and Joy. They picked these names because they felt that they spoke to their cause. To promote the fundraiser, the third graders visited each classroom with the teddy bears. They also went on the morning announcements each day to encourage other students in their school to give a donation. For every five dollars donated, the students at School Two could have their name entered in the final drawing to win one of the four signature teddy bears.
In the weeks leading up to the drawing, the third grade explored what it meant to demonstrate the trait of generosity. They wrote fiction stories with morals that centered around each teddy bear. They also wrote essays that described how they could “give back” in the upcoming year. To conclude this unit of study, the students wrote letters and cards to the children of Saint Jude. It was inspiring to see how enthusiastic the children were about their cause.
On December 23rd, The Principal of School Number Two, Mrs. Marianela Martin, picked the four winners of these special “care bears’. Exactly $865 was raised to donate to Saint Jude’s Children’s Fund. The School Two community’s overwhelming support helped to ensure that this fundraising project was a success. The third graders at School 2 left for Holiday break with an invaluable gift, the gift of knowing that they are capable of making a difference.
The 4th Grade is learning to write poetry by using descriptive words to create mental images in a reader’s mind. Students learned about rhyming patterns and to consider their audience when writing. Students are also learning about writing with a purpose. They were able to write their poems by utilizing the writing process of writing, revising, and editing. They completed the writing process by typing their poems on Chromebooks, publishing them, and sharing them with the class.
The PTA and Sixth Grade Committee is once again sponsoring the annual Valentine's chocolate heart and roses lollipop sale. The perfect gift for just $2 for family, friends, teachers, and other loved ones.

It’s unbelievable to think that it is already December!! Our school year is in full swing. Teachers have been working diligently with your children and we are already into our second marking period. As such, I have some reminders that I would like to share with you with reference to recess time and students’ arrival times.
Please be sure to send your child to school with a coat or warm jacket. Students go outside for recess every day as long as it is not raining/snowing and the temperature is above 36 degrees. Students that are not wearing a coat/jacket will not be permitted to go outside for recess unless they have a note from a parent stating they do not need to wear their coat.
We also need your help eliminating the tardiness of some of our children.
The preschool school day begins promptly at 8:00 AM. The students are involved in center activities during the first part of the morning and snack time. Please plan to arrive before 8:00am so your child can enter the classroom with his/her peers and begin the daily routine. When students are late they miss interacting with their peers and snack time. During both of these periods of time the children are learning from one another, having conversations, building friendships, and developing self help skills. They also have daily jobs during that time period which aides them in learning 1-1 correspondence and having a responsibility to the class. These are vital parts of preschool learning and we want your children to be a part of it all.
We also have several students in grades kindergarten through grade 6 that arrive late every day. Classes begin promptly at 8:50 AM. Children that consistently arrive late are missing the most important part of their lesson – the introduction, which explains the objective and purpose of the lesson. We all know traffic in Fort Lee is very challenging, but it is imperative to have your child arrive to school on time.

The PTA will be hosting a snack sale Wednesday, November 25th at 1:00 PM after the early dismissal at the front entrance of the school. All snacks and drinks will be $1.
Please remember that all students will be dismissed at 1:00 PM for the Thanksgiving holiday. There will be NO Club Ed.

Please support Fort Lee High School's production of Almost Maine playing Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, the 19th 20th, and 21st at the Fort Lee High School auditorium. Half of the proceeds of Opening Night, Thursday, the 19th will be donated to the Ortiz family of School No. 2.

Traditionally we have celebrated American Education Days during the third week of November.
As always, the safety and security of our students and staff remains our number one priority.
In light of the current international tragedy, the administration has decided school visits for American Education Days will be postponed to a later date.

As Halloween approaches, please remember to review safety rules with your children. They should never go out alone, they should not go “Trick or Treating” without an adult, and they should NEVER eat any of their treats without your approval.
Our Halloween parade will take place (weather permitting) tomorrow, October 30st at 2:15 PM (It will start at 2:00 PM for the pre-school and kindergarten). Students should come to school wearing their costumes. Please make sure your child is able to use the bathroom without assistance, and that the costume is comfortable to have on all day. They should not wear any “props”. If your child needs to, he/she may change into the costume at lunchtime, but please be aware he/she must be able to do this by him/herself. They are not permitted to have weapons of any kind; masks should not be worn (only during the parade).
You are welcome to come and watch the parade; please report directly to the playground area at 2:00 PM. Students will walk around the black top about 2 or 3 times and then re-enter the building for dismissal. At that time, please meet your child at his/her daily dismissal area.
If, for any reason, you prefer that your child NOT participate in the Halloween parade and/or classroom activities, you have the option to pick up your child before lunch (at 11:30). Please be sure to send a note to your child’s teacher to notify him/her if your child will leave early. When you come in to pick up your child, please report to the main office to sign your child out and we will have him/her meet you in the main lobby.
